SYLVA AND BRYSON CITY – Harris Regional Hospital and Swain Community Hospital celebrated National Nurses’ Week with a series of special meals and giveaways to honor the hospitals’ nursing staff.

More than 300 nurses and nursing assistants provide care at Harris Regional Hospital and Swain Community Hospital working in nearly every department and physician practice, and providing support for other hospital departments, staff, physicians, and patients. In addition to the two hospitals, Harris and Swain operate Harris Regional Hospital Medical Park of Franklin, Harris Urgent Care in Sylva, and 11 physician practices.

National Nurses’ Week is presented by the American Nurses Association. The 2016 theme is ‘Culture of Safety: It Starts With You’. Nurses at Harris and Swain demonstrate leadership in providing a safe environment for patients and families by following national patient safety guidelines and participating in safety measures such as bedside shift reporting, nursing huddles, briefs and debriefs meetings focused on patient, staff, and medical staff communication.

Each day of National Nurses’ Week the hospitals held drawings for gift certificates from local businesses in Sylva, Bryson City and Franklin. Special events like and omelet and smoothie bar were held throughout the week.
