Harris Cancer Center Partners with Jackson County Recreation Department
June 9, 2022

The Harris Regional Cancer Center proudly announces a partnership with the Jackson County Parks and Recreation Department to better aid the recovery and health of cancer patients in western North Carolina. Exercise is an integral part of a healthy recovery, and important to establishing a healthy lifestyle. According to the American Cancer Society, exercise reduces fatigue, decreases anxiety and depression, improves sleep, increases muscular strength and bone health, and strengthens your immune system. If a patient is currently in treatment, exercise can reduce the treatment side effects. Further, exercise has been stated in research literature to reduce the risk of cancer returning.
Exercise and being physically active are critical to a healthy recovery for cancer. The Harris Regional Cancer Center acknowledges the importance of exercise before, during, and after the cancer treatment process, and for these reasons, is partnering with the Jackson County Recreation Center to better support patients in our communities.
The Jackson County Parks and Recreation Department is offering a 20% discount on all regularly priced memberships for referred patients at the Harris Cancer Center, as well as a 20% discount on select personal training packages. The Harris Regional Cancer Center and the Jackson County Parks and Recreation Department are thrilled to partner together to benefit local cancer patients.
Rusty Ellis, Director of the Jackson County Parks and Recreation Department, “We here at the Jackson County Parks and Recreation Department are very excited to partner with Harris Regional Cancer Center to provide the cancer patients the opportunity to come exercise at our facility. The benefits of excising after any surgery or injury is endless. We have a full range of both strength and cardio equipment as well as certified personal trainers that can assist and can create a personalized exercise program to fit any individual needs.”
“Dr. Tanksley, radiation oncologist at Harris Regional Cancer Center, and his staff understand the true importance of exercise and physical activity in the treatment and recovery process, which is why this partnership is invaluable to our community members. This partnership presents more affordable exercise opportunities to better our patients’ health during and after treatment,” says Chris Munton, CEO at Harris Regional Hospital.
If you are a smoker or a former smoker, and between the ages of 50 and 80, you may qualify or be eligible for a lung cancer screening exam. Lung cancer symptoms typically do not show up until the disease has advanced, so this early detection is key to catching cancer early and more effectively treating it. A lung cancer screening exam is a painless screening that usually takes less than a minute to complete, but its benefits can last far longer.
