Local First Responders and Community Agencies Continue to Prepare for “Battle of the Badges” Blood Drive This Week

May 18, 2026

Local first responders and community agencies across Jackson County are teaming up with the American Red Cross this week for the “Battle of the Badges” community blood drive competition, an event designed to encourage lifesaving blood donations while bringing the community together in friendly competition.

Participating groups include the Sylva Police Department, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Harris EMS, Jackson County Emergency Management, Sylva Fire Department, and other local agencies serving the community. Donors will have the opportunity to cast a vote for the participating badge of their choice, with the winning organization earning local bragging rights for the year.

The blood drive will take place on Thursday, May 21, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM in the Burrell Building at Southwestern Community College.

Eligible donors with blood types O, A-, and B- are encouraged to consider making a Power Red donation, which can help maximize the impact of their contribution. Donors who complete a Power Red donation will also receive a second vote for their chosen badge. Additional information about Power Red donations is available at redcrossblood.org/powered.

Free food will be available for participants throughout the event. As a thank-you, all successful donors will receive a limited-edition American Red Cross beach towel while supplies last.

Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood, and a single donation can help save multiple lives. Community blood drives like “Battle of the Badges” play an important role in helping maintain the blood supply needed for patients across the region.

Appointments can be scheduled by visiting redcrossblood.org and entering sponsor code BattleoftheBadgesJackson or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS.
