Humans Who Heal: Spotlight on Astarria “Star” Garcia-Hooper, LPN

January 09, 2026

As part of Harris Regional and Swain Community Hospitals’ Humans Who Heal campaign, we are proud to spotlight Astarria “Star” Garcia-Hooper, LPN, whose work as a Clinical Coordinator at Harris Family Care–Franklin reflects a deep commitment to community, continuity of care, and supporting patients and families through every stage of life.

Star has worked in healthcare for 20 years, serving in a variety of departments and clinics at Harris Regional Hospital. Prior to her current role as a Clinical Coordinator at Harris Family Care–Franklin, she worked as a floor nurse on the surgical unit, the mother/baby unit, and in pediatrics. These experiences have shaped her approach to patient care and strengthened her long-standing commitment to serving the community.

What is your role at the hospital, and how long have you been here?
I’m a Clinical Coordinator at Harris Family Care–Franklin, and I’ve been part of the Harris Regional Hospital family for 20 years. Over that time, I’ve had the opportunity to work in several departments, including surgical services, mother/baby, pediatrics, and now primary care, which allows me to support patients across a wide range of needs.

What inspired you to go into healthcare or your specific role?
I truly care about helping people. I love community and wanted a career where I could help others as much as possible. Healthcare gave me the opportunity to do that in a very real, hands-on way, and it’s something that has stayed meaningful to me throughout my entire career.

What do you love most about your job?
One of the things I love most is transitioning from caring for pediatric patients to working with older adults. It was definitely a challenge at first, but it has been incredibly rewarding. I get to watch people grow and, in many cases, follow them through different stages of their lives. I’m able to share meaningful moments with patients and families during some of the most joyful and most difficult times they experience.

Can you share a moment or memory that has stuck with you during your time here?
Some of the moments that stay with me most are the ones where I’m able to be present with patients and families during major life changes. Whether it’s welcoming a new baby, supporting a family through illness, or helping someone navigate long-term care, those shared moments of trust and connection are what make this work so special.

What does healing mean to you, whether physically, emotionally, or in another way?
To me, healing is a team effort. Every patient has unique needs, and I work closely with community partners and care teams to make sure those needs are met. Healing also means offering support: treating and caring for the whole person with the respect, compassion, and dignity they deserve.

What is something people might not know about your role or department?
Many people don’t realize how much of my role is about supporting the entire care team. In addition to working with patients, I help keep our staff connected and supported, especially during very busy days. A cohesive team makes a difference for everyone, patients and staff alike.

The Humans Who Heal campaign continues to spotlight compassionate and skilled team members from all departments at Harris Regional Hospital, Swain Community Hospital, and affiliated clinics. These are the people behind the scenes and at the bedside who help bring healing to life one patient, one family, and one story at a time.
