Harris Regional Hospital welcomes certified nurse midwife Lisa Shoemaker, CNM to its medical staff

September 23, 2025

Harris Regional Hospital is pleased to announce the addition of Lisa Shoemaker, CNM, to its medical staff. Shoemaker will begin seeing patients October 1, 2025, at Harris Women’s Care, located at 70 The Village Overlook in Sylva.

Shoemaker earned her Master of Science in Nursing from Frontier Nursing University and is a board-certified nurse midwife. With more than eight years of labor and delivery nursing experience, most recently at New Generations Family Birthing Center at Harris Regional Hospital, she has also gained broad training in women’s health and midwifery care across both North Carolina and Mississippi.

Shoemaker’s clinical interests include contraceptive and prenatal care, as well as supporting women throughout their lifespan.

“I love being able to walk with women through their individual journeys,” Shoemaker said. “Midwifery allows me to spend time building relationships and providing personalized, compassionate care.”

Originally from Gulfport, Mississippi, Shoemaker first came to western North Carolina on a travel nursing assignment and immediately felt at home. After returning for additional assignments and completing her midwifery clinicals here, she decided to stay permanently, having been drawn to the welcoming spirit of the community. She looks forward to continuing to serve women in the region.

Midwifery care combines the medical expertise of a licensed provider with a personalized, relationship-focused approach to women’s health. Certified nurse midwives care for women throughout every stage of life, including adolescence, pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause. Their practice emphasizes education and shared decision-making, ensuring women feel supported and empowered in their care.

“We are proud to welcome Lisa Shoemaker to our women’s health team,” said Ashley Hindman, chief executive officer of Harris Regional Hospital. “Her years of nursing experience, specialized training in midwifery, and dedication to compassionate care will further enhance the excellent services we provide to women and families in our community.”
