Half a Century of Care: Harris Regional Hospital Celebrates Judy Aikens’ 50 Years
August 27, 2025
Harris Regional Hospital is celebrating a milestone of service and dedication as longtime employee Judy Aikens marks 50 years with the hospital. Her half-century of service reflects the hospital’s nearly 100-year tradition of caring for its community.
A lifelong resident of Whittier, Aikens began her journey at Harris the summer after graduating from high school. What started as a temporary summer job quickly became a lifelong calling that shaped her own career and influenced her family. Her twin daughters, both registered nurses, were born at Harris and have also worked within the Harris and Swain hospital system, carrying forward her example of service.
Over the decades, Aikens has held a variety of positions within the hospital that reflect her adaptability, reliability, and passion for healthcare. She began in housekeeping, later served as supervisor of sterile processing, rotated through the pharmacy and today works as a storeroom technician. In each role, Aikens has left her mark with hard work and a positive spirit.
When asked what has kept her at Harris for so long, Aikens answered without hesitation: “You can’t ask for anything better than working with a good group of people.” She credits the camaraderie and connection with colleagues - a daily support system that is funny, kind, and reliable - as the anchor of her five decades at the hospital.
In reflecting on her tenure, one of Aikens’ most vivid memories is the challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic. She recalls the intensity of those months and the pressure it placed on health care workers everywhere. Even in such a demanding time, she found purpose and pride, calling it a powerful learning experience and a testament to the strength and resilience of her team.
Now, after 50 years, Aikens is recognized not only for her tenure but also for the wisdom she has shared with others.
Her advice to new employees captures her legacy: “It could be your family here in the hospital next, so treat every patient like they are your own.”
Aikens is more than a longtime employee; she is considered a cornerstone of the Harris Regional family. Her career stands as an example of service with commitment and heart.
Throughout its history, Harris Regional Hospital has grown alongside the communities it serves in Jackson, Swain, and the surrounding counties. As the hospital reflects on nearly 100 years of care, it is proud to celebrate Aikens’ 50 years of service and the immeasurable impact she has made on patients, colleagues, and the community. Looking ahead, Harris remains committed to building on this legacy and continuing its mission of making communities healthier for generations to come.
