“JUST CHECK IT” IN HONOR OF NATIONAL PROSTATE CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

August 23, 2019

September is National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness and garner support for those affected by prostate cancer.  In honor of this month, the Great Smokies Health Foundation, the Jackson County Department of Public Health (JCDPH), the Jackson County Department on Aging and Harris Regional Hospital, a Duke LIfePoint Hospital have come together to urge men to take charge of their health and “Just Check It.”

Join us on September 16, 2019 at the Jackson County Department on Aging, 100 County Services Park, Sylva, from 9 AM-11 AM. There will be a presentation by Timothy Hann, FNP of Harris Urology, Counseling, Free PSA blood test screening and Informational booths.  The event is free and open to all men and their partners in our community; refreshments and giveaways will be provided.

Other than skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the United States.  The American Cancer Society estimates that there have been close to 175,000 new cases of prostate cancer diagnosed and 31,000 deaths from prostate cancer in this year alone.  While it is a serious disease, most men diagnosed with prostate cancer do not die from it.  The cancer is very treatable; more than 2.9 million men who have been diagnosed with the disease at some point in their life are still alive today.

To learn more about the event call 586-5494.  The event is made possible by donations to the Great Smokies Health Foundation Urology Education Fund created in memory of Dr. Il Whan Thomas Chung.
