The Harris Pain Center is an expansion of pain services for Harris Regional Hospital and Swain Community Hospital, which has operated the Swain Pain Center in Bryson City for more than a decade. Dr. Lewis, Dr. Berkwits and staff of the pain center care for a number of chronic conditions, such as neck and back pain, headaches and migraines, fibromyalgia, cancer pain, diabetic and joint pain, arthritis, neuropathic pain, sciatica and injuries sustained at work. The Harris Pain Center offers an extensive approach to your care including medication management, interventional procedures, pain pump and spinal cord stimulator implant and management  and psychological support.

Meet Our Providers: 

 

Leland Berkwits, MD, MS

Dr. Berkwits is board-certified in pain medicine and physical medicine and rehabilitation. After practicing physical medicine and rehabilitation for 13 years, he completed a fellowship in Pain Medicine at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore. He received his medical degree from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago.   Prior to entering medical school he received a Master of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering. He has always been interested in the application of new technology to treat medical conditions, and incorporates a systems approach to the diagnosis and treatment of painful conditions. His training in physical medicine and rehabilitation provides a deep understanding of painful neurological and musculoskeletal conditions. Dr. Berkwits served as co-editor of the medical text, Atlas of Image Guided Spinal Procedures, published in 2013, and has both authored and co-authored chapters in this text. He is a member of several professional organizations including the International Spinal Intervention Society, North American Spine Society and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation.

Dr. Berkwits likes to spend his free time with his wife and friends enjoying the beautiful scenery of Western North Carolina.   His interests include hiking, attempting to master playing piano, organic vegetable gardening, reading and travelling. An interesting fact about Dr. Berkwits is that he won a high school science fair in 1974 having presented a design for an electronic medical record.

Edward A Lewis, MD

Dr. Lewis is a board-certified pain physician and anesthesiologist. He received his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, where he also completed his residency in anesthesiology. He developed a desire to help pain patients early in his career. Over his 28 year career he has served as medical director of several pain clinics and served on hospital boards in Texas and North Carolina. Dr. Lewis brings a wide range of experience with interventional treatment of all forms of acute and chronic pain. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Neuromodulation Society and the American Academy of Pain Medicine.

Dr. Lewis likes to spend his free time with his family and friends. His interests are snow skiing, hiking, gardening, traveling, and watching the Discovery Channel. He is a lifetime learner. An interesting fact about Dr. Lewis is that he has been on the Oprah show!

Todd Lipphardt

Todd Lipphardt, PA-C

Todd Lipphardt is a board-certified Physician Assistant through the National Commission of Physician Assistants. He received his undergraduate degree from Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio and his Physician Assistant degree from Kettering College of Medical Arts, in 1988. Attracted by the beautiful mountains and scenery, he moved from Michigan to North Carolina in 2015. His approach to caring for patients is to provide them with the knowledge and resources that will help them best manage their health.

Todd spends as much of his free time, as he can, with his wife. Their 3 children are now adults and out in the real world, but he still sees them as often as possible. He enjoys the outdoors, especially hiking and camping. He’s also actively involved in community theater and enjoys taxidermy.


Jennifer Henderson, MSN, BSN, FNP-C

Jennifer Henderson is a certified nurse practitioner with Harris Pain Center. She received her Master of Nursing degree from Chamberlain College of Nursing.

Additional Practice Info: 

Insurance Policies - We participate with most insurance plans, but it is your responsibility to call your insurance carrier to determine whether or not we are included in your particular plan.  Also, if your plan requires a referral from your primary care physician for specialist office visits, you are responsible for obtaining this referral.  As a courtesy to our patients, we submit claims to all insurance companies provided we have complete and accurate information.  Any co-payments are due at the time of service.

Appointments - Please contact your physician for a referral.  Harris Pain Center is located across from Mountain Regional Cancer Center adjacent to the Harris Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center on the campus of Harris Regional Hospital.

 If you are unable to keep your appointment, please call our office at least 24 hours in advance so that we may use that time for another patient.

Telephone Calls - Except in emergencies, our providers do not accept calls during office hours.  Our office staff is experienced and able to answer most questions and are happy to relay your message to the providers.
