Did you know that one in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime? That’s why it’s important to begin annual mammogram screenings at age 40. Regular mammograms are essential to early detection and the fight against breast cancer. In fact, with early detection, the five-year survival rate for breast cancer is 100 percent.
- 40 is the age at which women should start getting annual mammograms
- 37% reduction in breast cancer deaths since mammography screening became widespread in 1990
- 1 in 6 breast cancers occur in women ages 40–49
- 3 of 4 women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history of the disease

Three-dimensional mammography creates a three-dimensional picture of the breast using X-rays. Several low-dose images from different angles around the breast are used to create the 3D picture. A conventional mammogram creates a two-dimensional image of the breast from two X-ray images of each breast. Several studies have found that 3D mammograms find more cancers than traditional 2D mammograms and also reduce the number of false positives. A 3D mammogram at Harris Regional Hospital can improve cancer detection by 40%*.
