Meet our New Generations Team
Dr. Sabine Kelischek is a board certified OB/GYN physician, practicing in western North Carolina since 1994. She received her B.S. from Davidson College and M.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. While there she also studied Health Policy and International Health at the School of Public Health. Her interest in health policy took her to Washington, D.C. where she served as Legislative Director for the American Medical Student Association. She completed her residency training at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia and soon thereafter relocated to the mountains to enter private practice. She practiced at Smoky Mountain OB/GYN before joining Harris Women’s Care in the fall of 2015. Kelischek loves contra dancing and sings with the Asheville Choral Society. Other interests include gardening, quilting, and literature.
Dr. Megan Metcalf received a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Austin College. She continued to medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Center School of Medicine in San Antonio, Texas earning her Medical Doctorate. She attended residency training in Roanoke, Virginia with Virginia Tech - Carillion, specializing in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Metcalf’s clinical interests include minimally invasive gynecological surgery, care for high risk pregnancy, and adolescent and young adult health.
Her hobbies include hiking, cooking, and reading. She lives in Jackson County with her husband Matthew.
Alvin Strasburger, MD is an OB/GYN physician who recently completed his residency at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. Dr. Strasburger completed his undergraduate studies at Columbia University in New York City and earned his medical degree from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia, South Carolina. While in residency, Dr. Strasburger served as the Quality Improvement Chief Resident from 2016-2017. Dr. Strasburger and fiancé desire to relocate to WNC where they can enjoy a mild 4-season climate and an abundance of recreational venues and still be close to family in Columbia and Rock Hill, South Carolina.
Kathy Walsh is a board certified Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner (WHNP). Before moving to western North Carolina Kathy practiced in Illinois for 31 years in the field of collaborative and holistic care for women. She earned a B.S. from Western Illinois University and a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from the University of Wisconsin. Her Clinical interests range from OB care and birth control to menopause and integrative medicine. Kathy is also a Certified Lactation Educator. She practiced at Smoky Mountain OB/GYN before joining Harris Women’s Care in the fall of 2015. She enjoys hiking in our beautiful mountains. Among her many accomplishments, she is especially proud of raising four wonderful children and finishing the Chicago Marathon.
Sally Schaefer, CNM
Sally is a certified nurse midwife, joining Harris Women’s Care August 1, 2017. Schaefer has cared for women and delivered babies in the region for decades. She completed her postgraduate training at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Fla.
Judi is a certified nurse midwife, will join Harris Women’s Care September 11. Layton has practiced in the region since 2012. She completed her postgraduate training at the University of Pennsylvania.
Darci Walker, CNM
Darci Walker is a certified nurse midwife , joining Harris Women’s Care in 2018. Walker completed her postgraduate training at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. Walker's commitment to the philosophy of Midwifery and the well-being on the women in western North Carolina enables her to care for the women and growing families in our community with exceptional, quality care.
Anne Karner, CNM
Anne Karner, CNM is a certified nurse midwife, joining Harris Women’s Care in 2018. Karner has been caring for the women of western North Carolina for years and is happy to continue to do so alongside the expert team of providers at Harris Women’s Care and with the team in the New Generations Family Birthing Center at Harris Regional Hospital.
Schaefer, Layton, Walker and Karner provide obstetrical care and routine women’s healthcare alongside Sabine Kelischek, MD, Megan Metcalf, MD, Alvin Strasburger, MD, and Kathy Walsh, NP serving the Sylva, Bryson City, and Franklin locations.
